Summer in the UK can mean only one thing – the Wimbledon Championships. The world’s top players will convene on SW19 for weeks of high quality tennis at the sport’s most iconic venue.
Novak Djokovic comes to the capital aiming to equal Serena Williams’ incredible 24 Grand Slam record in the Open era. He’s the fancied favourite for this, but there will be more than a few with designs of their own.
Here, we’ll preview the 2023 men’s Wimbledon singles in the hopes that we can predict the eventual winner. Keep reading to find out more.
Top seed
Djokovic ducked the Cinch Championships at Queens Club last week, presumably to ensure he was fit to take part here. That allowed Carlos Alcaraz to cruise to another impressive tournament win and retake his place as world number one ahead of Wimbledon. That won’t bother the Serbian too much, however, as his eyes are firmly fixed on making history.
What he may have done, however, is hand his closest rival a significant confidence boost as he comes into this tournament as the top seed. The Spaniard has already shown that he is the future of the sport and is set to dominate once Djokovic and Nadal have retired. He’ll want to start that new era right here in London.
Home hopes
The likes of Andy Murray, Cam Norrie and Dan Evans will be carrying the hopes of Great Britain in this one. Norrie fared best of the home hopes at Queens Club last week and is probably the most likely to progress to the latter stages, should the draw do him a favour. Andy Murray will do everything he can to compete, however the Scot continues to struggle with injuries.
Regardless of who does what, you can rest assured that all of the home players will get a fantastic amount of support from the amazing SW19 crowd. Who knows, maybe it will be enough to push Murray onto what would be his most spectacular Grand Slam win. It seems unlikely, but sport is all about stories and that one would be a story for the ages.
No surprises
This competition tends to throw up a fairy tale story with an unseeded player making a heroic run through the tournament. Despite that, it’s impossible to look past either Djokovic or Alcaraz to win the men’s single title. If they’re on separate sides of the draw, we are expecting no surprises and the world’s top two to meet in the final.
That’s not the most exciting prediction in the world, granted. However, these two are by far the most in form players on the planet at the moment and every tennis fan deserves to see them go head to head for the title in a few week’s time.
Regardless of what happens, Wimbledon will provide a wonderful two weeks of quality tennis, as it always does. Watch along to see your favourite players duke it out and which celebs make it to the royal box!
