Liverpool host Everton at Anfield for the 244th Merseyside Derby in Saturday’s early Premier League kick off.
The Reds come into this game just three points off top spot, with Tottenham currently leading the table after eight games. With Spurs not in action until Monday, this is a good chance for Jurgen Klopp’s men to put pressure on the North Londoners.
Here, we’ll preview this weekend’s big game and provide you with some betting suggestions that we hope can land you big returns.
Long history
This fixture has a long and storied history, being one of the most played games of all time in English football. As well as this, it’s also the one Premier League fixture that has produced the most red cards ever with 22 in total and the most that has seen 0-0 draws with 12. No other game in English League history has produced more draws than this fixture with 69, which is a testament to just how competitive these games are.
It’s Liverpool who have had the upperhand in recent years, however, winning five of the last ten clashes. Four of those ten have ended all square, while Everton have only managed one win, which was their first in a Merseyside Derby for 12 years. Given how the two teams have started their respective seasons, it wouldn’t be a surprise for Liverpool to continue their dominance over their neighbours.
Continued struggles
Everton come into this season after back to back relegation battles in the Premier League. After a start to the season that has seen them already lose to Fulham, Wolves, and Luton, Toffees fans must be fearing the worst for their side this campaign. The international break may have come at the worst time for them however, as they were able to beat Bournemouth 3-0 a fortnight ago.
Now, Sean Dyche’s men must try and rediscover that form following the domestic league break against none other than their bitter local rivals. There is some faint hope for the away side, as Liverpool have lost and drawn their last two Premier League games, albeit against Tottenham and Brighton. So if the visitors are going to get a historic win, they’ll need to be at the top of their game.
Egyptian King
Mo Salah has made a strong start to the season for the Reds, with five goals so far. The Egyptian King has also bagged four goals in his last five games against the Toffees and scored in each of his three Premier League home games this campaign. This all points towards the Kop’s main attacking threat finding the net again in this match up.
Everton’s main attacking threat will come from striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who seems to have rediscovered his scoring touch after some tough injuries. The most likely way the away side are going to score in this is from a set piece.
