Jake Paul v Tommy Fury Preview

Jake Paul v Tommy Fury Preview

Table of Contents

Jake Paul and Tommy Fury finally meet in the ring on Sunday in Saudi Arabia after months of back and forth between the two in the media.

YouTube star Jake Paul has brought an entirely new audience to the sport of boxing. That’s resulting in a very handsome pay day for both fighters, regardless of what the result is.

Here, we’ll preview this bout in the hopes we can figure out who is more likely to win. Read on for more.

Not all smiles

Not everyone is happy about Paul’s foray into the sport of boxing, however. Many hardcore fans feel that the YouTuber taking on professional boxers who’ve practised the sport all their lives makes a mockery of the sport.

There is a counter to that argument. Jake Paul’s involvement in the sport of boxing has created fantastic opportunities for up and coming boxers to get their name out there on the undercards. This fight night, which will be televised nationally on BT Sport, is the latest example of that.

A lot to lose

Tommy Fury has a lot more to lose than his counterpart in this fight. The 23 year old hails from a proud boxing family that includes none other than the lineal World Champion Tyson Fury. With that kind of heritage, there’s more than money on the line here, it’s the family name and the reputation it holds in the sport.

This is a no win situation for Fury, who is arguably better known for his stint on TV reality show Love Island, and subsequent romance with influencer Molly-Mae Hague, than he is for his escapades inside the ring. If Fury wins, even by knockout, he will simply have “just beaten a YouTuber”. However, if he loses, that would cast a shadow on professional boxing and ruin his fighting career.

Mind games

This is the third time that these two have attempted to organise a bout and it’s finally happening for real in Saudi Arabia on Sunday. Some of the earlier cancellations could have been mind games from Fury, who was the instigator of both cancelled fights previously. However, he doesn’t appear to have that in him and it could just as easily have been about money.

Jake Paul looks to be very involved in the mind games and, ever since the negotiations began for fight one last year, he has constantly been calling out Fury on social media. The American has so far beaten a couple of MMA fighters in the ring in Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva, but this is his first bout against a professional boxer.

Rankings on the table

The WBC recently confirmed that, should Jake Paul beat Tommy Fury, that they will consider officially ranking the YouTuber as a professional. That gives Paul a whole lot more motivation than he already had to win this one. It also heaps a mountain of pressure on Fury. The bookies actually have Paul priced as favourite for this, can he go on and win?
